Opportunity for DVM students to register for Electives

During Fall 2008, the following courses are offered as Electives:

1.   VSGP 824:            Captive Wildlife Management of Mammals /15 to 26 Sept. 2008

2.   VSGP 839:            Captive Wildlife Management of Birds / 13 to 24 Oct 2008

3.   VSGP 812:            Practical Application of Molecular Diagnostic Assays / 20 Oct to 7 Nov 2008

The courses will be taught mostly during evening hours from 5:00p.m. to 7:00 p.m. or 8.00 p.m. and may involve lab sessions on Saturdays and Sundays.  The courses will be graded pass/fail after a final exam and will appear on students’ transcripts, but do not contribute to the DVM GPA calculation.  The course fee for these Electives is US$240.00 per credit.

Registration will open on Monday, 1st September, 2008.

Closing date for registration is Friday 5th September, 2008.

Please collect the registration form from the course director or Ms. Kamisha Redhead, Executive Secretary, in the Trailer office (behind the Sugar Shack Restaurant).

 

Description of Courses

1. VSGP 824:  Captive Wildlife Management of Mammals

(Course Director- Dr. Ulrike Zieger)

This 1 credit course will be presented by Dr. George Kollias, Director of the Wildlife Centre at Cornell University.  The course covers those principles of captive wildlife management, which are essential to managing wild animals in a captive or semi-free-ranging environment.  A variety of disciplines will be integrated in this course, exposing students to a well rounded approach to the husbandry and veterinary care of these animals.  Clinical as well as non-clinical aspects will be addressed.

2. VSGP 839:   Captive Wildlife Management of Birds

(Course Director- Dr. Ulrike Zieger)

This 1 credit course will be presented by Dr. Michael Waters, Director of the Wildlife Program, at the Royal Veterinary College, London.  The course covers those principles of captive wildlife managements, which are essential to managing wild birds in a captive or semi-free-ranging environment.  A variety of disciplines will be integrated in this course, exposing students to a well rounded approach to the husbandry and veterinary care of these animals.  Clinical and non-clinical aspects will be addressed.

3. VSGP 812:   Practical Application of Molecular Diagnostic Assays

(Course Director- Dr. Ravindra Sharma)

This 2 credit course will be presented by Dr. Lloyd Lauerman from Washington, USA.  The course covers principles and application of PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) in the diagnosis and research of animal diseases.  Students will have hands-on practice on PCR methodology during the laboratory sessions.
