On Wednesday, October 29, 2008, SGUSVM's American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) student chapter paid tribute to visiting professor Dr. John McCarthy, who teaches the Ethics, Jurisprudence & Career Development course. The event, which included a Tree Dedication Ceremony and the presentation of a plaque, was held on the grounds of the Small Animal Hospital. The Tree Dedication Ceremony was attended by Dr. & Mrs. John McCarthy, SVM faculty and students and was moderated by Dr. Tara Paterson with remarks delivered by SVM Dean, Dr. Raymond Sis.  President of the AAHA Student Chapter, Jennifer Lopez commented, “I have been able to learn from Dr. McCarthy the very ideals of striving for excellence within myself and for my colleagues.  Dr. McCarthy has allowed AAHA at SGU to raise the bar in veterinary medicine with mentorship and guidance through educational programs designed to help our community learn more about companion animals and companion animal practice.”

The tree of choice was a Plumeria, otherwise known as “Frangipani”.  In dedicating the tree, Jennifer stated that just as the Frangipani  produces a beautifully fragrant flower and originates from Mexico, Central America and Venezuela, so has Dr. McCarthy, grown roots in many other countries around the world, including Grenada. This tree was therefore considered ideal for Dr. McCarthy, as he has mentored a tremendous amount of people throughout his career.  According to Jennifer, “Each species of Frangipani bears differently shaped leaves and their form and growth habits are also distinct, just as each person that he has helped to cultivate.  We look forward to this sapling's growth, as it serves as a tangible reminder of how Dr. McCarthy has touched our lives, both professionally and personally. Thank you Dr. McCarthy.”

Founded in 1933, the American Animal Hospital Association is well known for its high standards in veterinary practices, quality pet care and promoting these standards within the veterinary profession and to the public. The St. George's University's Student Chapter of the American Animal Hospital Association was introduced in Fall 2002. This student chapter promotes the ideals of AAHA through informative lectures, hands-on wet labs, and up-to-date demonstrations by qualified veterinarians with concentration on practical small animal care.
