A Veterinary Perspective of Exotic and Wildlife Experiences around the World during 2008:

Into the Wild: Research in East Africa

In this week’s issue of Paws Print, we present you with another exotic and wildlife experience around the world during 2008.

In June of this year, veterinary student, Brittany King was part of a team conducting research in Uganda.  As part of this research, Brittany was involved with disease investigation in Lake Mburo National Park associated with zebra deaths and also with a Brucellosis study of kobs, cattle and goats in Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve in Uganda.

According to Brittany, the investigation in Lake Mburo National Park (LMNP) came about as a result of field reports of zebra deaths in LMNP, which initiated with reports from ranches where zebras grazed with cows.  Since the causes of death were not known, Senior Warden of Research and Monitoring from Queen Elizabeth National Park was called to investigate the deaths.  The warden’s investigations involved post mortem examinations on some of the dead zebras, following which she gave her recommendations....
