Career Development Seminar a Success

On Monday, August 31 and Tuesday, September 1, 2009, all SVM fifth and sixth term students participated in a two-day Career Development Seminar on the True Blue Campus. The seminar which focused on personal, professional and career growth and development was aimed at preparing participants for the transition from students to employed veterinarians.
Presented by adjunct professor, Dr. James Wilson, DVM, JD, of Priority Veterinary Management Consultants, the seminar addressed interesting topics such as:
- What employers are looking for
- Resumes and cover letters
- Interviewing skills
- Long distance job search and selection
- Ingredients in an employment contract
- Goals and goal setting
- Personal finance issues
- Contract negotiation and assignment
These topics were quite relevant and provided a wonderful opportunity for these veterinary students during their final year on the True Blue Campus to equip themselves with valuable information and important professional skills.
Each year, Dr. Wilson visits SGUSVM during the Fall term to conduct these Career Development Seminars, which are ultimately aimed at preparing students for successful veterinary careers. In addition to teaching fifty hours of course material at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Wilson teaches veterinary law, ethics, and/or practice management at twenty veterinary schools across the United States and the Caribbean.
We wish to thank Dr. Wilson for his keen delivery of such relevant and informative lectures. Thanks are also extended to all of the students who participated in the seminar and to all of the faculty and staff who contributed to its success.
