Research Experience Opportunity for DVM Students
Project title: To determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance profiles of Campylobacter spp., Listeria spp., E. coli 0157 and Salmonella spp., isolated in poultry in Grenada.
Commencing – October 12, 2009
Completion – December 2010
Expected outcome: The research will result in surveillance of Campylobacter, Listeria, E. coli and Salmonella and their antimicrobial resistance, isolated in poultry in Grenada.
Research protocol:
- Cloacal swabs before slaughter, swabs from the abdominal cavity and liver samples after slaughter of chickens will be collected.
- Bacterial isolation and identification from these specimens will be attempted.
- Antimicrobial resistance profiles of the isolates (Campylobacter, E. coli, Listeria and Salmonella) will be determined.
Vacancy – three students to work with the project.
Eligibility – DVM students, Term 3 and above. Students in term 1 and 2 with previous research experience in bacteriology.
Job expected from students:
- Assist in the laboratory for
- Isolation and identification of bacteria from the specimens
- Perform antimicrobial sensitivity on the isolates
