Research Experience Opportunity for DVM Students

Project title:  To determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance profiles of Campylobacter spp., Listeria spp., E. coli 0157 and Salmonella spp., isolated in poultry in Grenada.

Commencing – October 12, 2009

Completion – December 2010

Expected outcome:   The research will result in surveillance of Campylobacter, Listeria, E. coli and Salmonella and their antimicrobial resistance, isolated in poultry in Grenada.

Research protocol:

  1. Cloacal swabs before slaughter, swabs from the abdominal cavity and liver samples after slaughter of chickens will be collected. 
  2. Bacterial isolation and identification from these specimens will be attempted.
  3. Antimicrobial resistance profiles of the isolates (Campylobacter, E. coli, Listeria and Salmonella) will be determined.

Vacancy – three students to work with the project.

Eligibility – DVM students, Term 3 and above.  Students in term 1 and 2 with previous research experience in bacteriology.

Job expected from students:

  1. Assist in the laboratory for
    • Isolation and identification of bacteria from the specimens
    • Perform antimicrobial sensitivity on the isolates
