My Visit to the 56th Annual International Veterinary Student Association Summer Congress

This past summer, during the period July 16 – 27, 2007, I had the great opportunity to participate in the 56th Annual International Veterinary Student Association (IVSA) Summer Congress in Spain. An important event at the congress was the Development Auction Fund, for which participants brought along typical items from their countries such as crafts and beverages, or items such as books and clothing from their universities, for auctioning. This auction is held each year and the proceeds go to a Development Fund for less privileged veterinary faculties/schools, to help students and veterinary faculties/schools around the world. This year, part of the funds raised will be donated to the new veterinary faculty in Kosovo.
Students from Veterinary Faculties/schools from 19 countries (Croatia, Poland, UK-Ireland, South Africa, France, Nigeria, Hungary, Slovenia, Austria, Greece, Peru, Belgium, Denmark, USA, Australia, Turkey, Switzerland, South Korea, and Grenada) brought their cultures together at the congress. During the congress, I visited four different Schools of Veterinary Medicine in the provinces of Madrid, Leon, Lugo and Barcelona. At these schools, I was able to appreciate the differences between the participating faculties/schools, meet professors of veterinary medicine, and visit anatomy museums and teaching hospitals.
Thanks to Marta Lanza, DVM and Spanish IVSA students, at the end of the congress, I had the amazing opportunity to work for one week in two different Veterinary Clinics. This provided a first hand opportunity to see and appreciate how the techniques and treatments vary between practices in different clinics and countries. Thanks also to St. Georges University, School of Veterinary Medicine, for giving me this opportunity to expand my knowledge and participate in a wonderful experience.
