Because we are indelibly committed to social responsibility and justice concerns, the Psychological Services Center (PSC) staff collaborate with the island community in various programs and projects, many of which have been ongoing and will continue for the next years. Please see below for a partial listing of these activities. We welcome invitations to participate in further ways to benefit the local community. Please note that all of these services are provided free of charge. Contact the PSC for more information.
2004
- Coalition for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (5.04 to 4.05) – Participated in advocacy group addressing needs of disabled in Grenada.
- Individual Counseling (9.04 to present) – Providing counseling to dozens of persons referred from the community for higher-level mental health care. (Many in earlier years were for Hurricane Ivan-related issues).
- Return to Happiness Steering Committee (10.04 to 9.05) – Under the auspices of the SGU Psychology Relief Team, provided administrative assistance for island-wide UNICEF program that was designed to foster the return to normal functioning of thousands of children and adolescents post-Hurricane Ivan.
- Grenada Wellness Program (10.04 to 10.05) – Trained 18 community professionals in counseling and provided follow-up supervision and consultation in regular clinical meetings.
- Grenada Red Cross (10.04) – Debriefed 32 volunteers after Hurricane Ivan disaster relief work.
- Wellness Facilitators Program (11.04) – Trained 24 Red Cross Volunteers in paraprofessional counseling as part of health enhancement project.
- Bel Air Home for Children and Adolescents (11.04 to 4.05) – Provided individualized counseling for youngsters experiencing a variety of problems.
2005
- National Counseling Service Design Team (2.05) – Attended workshop to plan national counseling service.
- Legal Aid and Counseling Clinic (3.05 to 3.07) – Provided clinical consultation and supervision to clinicians as needed. Accepted referrals for clients needing higher-level of care.
- Peace Corps of the United States (8.05 to present) – Supporting volunteers via individual counseling and collaboration with community projects.
2006
- International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (8.06 to 11.07) – Translated disaster manual from Spanish to English. Assisting with making cross-culturally appropriate for use in Grenada.
- Queen Elizabeth’s Children’s Home (10.06 to present) – Consultation and training regarding various improvements to program that benefits 20 children in residence.
- March Against Gender-Based Violence (11.06) – Walked in St. George’s with approximately 100 local persons representing governmental agencies, NGOs and other associations to draw attention to the plight of the many Grenadian women who are victimized by violence.
2007
- Vagina Monologues (2.07) – Assisted with play that, as part of an international anti-violence campaign, celebrates women and gives voice to the hardships that they face. Performances were attended by approximately 700 persons. Ticket sales generated about 11,000 ECD for local agencies addressing needs of battered women.
- Community/University Workshop on Gender-Based Violence (4.07) – Hosted workshop for 65 persons from governmental agencies and other NGOs that addressed parameters of gender-based violence in Grenada, treatment and legal services on the island and the neuroscience of violence.
- Ocean Conservancy International Coastal Cleanup (9.07) – Participated and helped organize cleaning of several beaches in Grenada by dozens of SGU students, faculty and community members.
- Consultation on a Policy Framework for Legislation Against Sexual Harassment in Grenada (10.07) – Hosted approximately 50 stakeholders from governmental agencies and other NGOs in meeting to discuss and develop framework that will be used to inform the pending drafting of a Sexual Harassment Act for Grenada.
- Grenada National Organization of Women (11.07 to present) – Provided training for 44 community persons as para-professional counselors to support women who are violence victims.
2008
- Grenada National Organization of Women (1.08 and 9.08) – Continued paraprofessional training mentioned above for an additional 44 persons.
- Peace Corps of the United States (2.08) – Stress management training for 25 volunteers.
- Vagina Monologues (3.08 ) – Assisted with performance described above to benefit the Cedars Home for Abused Women and Their Children. Approximately 12,600 ECD was raised.
- Conflict Resolution Workshop (3.08) – Hosted workshop series with SGU stakeholders and community members from various walks of life in Grenada. Please see conflict resolution page for further information.
- Alzheimer's Support Group (6.08) – Informational training for 15 community members.
- National Children's Home (8.08) – Life skills training for 20 adolescent Grenadians.
- Gender-based Violence Roundtable (12.08) – Planning meeting with 20 members of the Royal Grenadian Police Force, Grenada National Organization of Women, governmental ministries and others.
2009
- Vagina Monologues (2.09 ) – The PSC remains an enthusiastic supporter of this program to benefit the Cedars Home for Abused Women and Their Children. 30,000 ECD was generated and more than 900 people attended this year.

- Multi-Sectoral Consultation (7.09) – Development of National Protocol on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.
- Program for Adolescent Mothers (7.09) – Training.
- Ministry of Youth (8.09) – Youth workers counseling training.
- Autism Grenada (11.09) – Organizational meeting.
2010
- Vagina Monologues (2.10 ) – Once again the PSC was a proud sponsor. This year, the benefit generated about 16,000 ECD for the Grenada Organization of Women.
