Psychological Emergencies and Suicide

During a 2006 survey of 94,806 students conducted by the American College Health Association (http://www.acha-ncha.org/pubs_rpts.html), it was found that:

  • 94 out of 100 students reported feeling overwhelmed by all they had to do.
  • 44 out of 100 have felt so depressed it was difficult to function.
  • 18 out of 100 reported having a depressive disorder.
  • 12 out of 100 had an anxiety disorder.
  • 9 out of 100 reported having seriously considered suicide within the previous year.
  • 13 out of every 1,000 students actually attempted suicide at least once during the last year.

We find these numbers to be alarming. Please, if you are thinking of suicide, or we could help you in some way, do contact us. A Psychological Services Center (PSC) clinician is available 24 hours a day.

To arrange a consultation with a clinician, phone 473.439.2277 or drop by our offices on the second floor of Building E on the True Blue Campus on weekdays 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Outside of those hours and during weekends and holidays, the PSC can be accessed for psychological emergencies via the Department of Public Safety and Security (777, True Blue - 444.3898, Grand Anse - 444.4456), Health Services Clinic (444.4671) and Resident Assistants.
