2009 Awards for Junior Faculty from the Caribbean and Central America

Awards to participate in an eight-week Faculty Enhancement Program are offered under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act for junior faculty in the mathematics or science fields from countries of the Caribbean and Central America.

LOCATION & PROGRAM DATES

LASPAU: Academic and Professional Programs for the Americas will host the Junior Foreign Faculty Enhancement Program on the campus of Harvard University in the summer of 2009.  Participants will arrive in June and depart in August. 

PROGRAM CONTENT

The program will consist of an eight-week academic exchange experience consisting of pedagogical instruction and the opportunity to attend academic classes in participants’ fields of study at the Harvard Summer School.   Participants will also partake in field-related research or serve as teaching assistants under the mentorship of U.S. professors, contribute to the community through volunteer work and community talks, and take advantage of the numerous opportunities to learn about the diversity of the United States that are offered in the Boston area.

ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION

Junior faculty at public and private universities who teach in the fields of mathematics, or the natural or physical sciences, are eligible to apply. Applicants must have at a minimum a bachelor’s degree and two years of university teaching experience.  Faculty need not be employed full-time at a single institution.  Preference will be given to applicants who have not had substantial research, teaching, study or employment experience in the United States, especially within the last five years.  Program activities will be conducted in English so applicants must have a sufficient command of the language.  Applicants must be Citizens or permanent residents of the country from which they apply. Persons holding permanent U.S. visas are not eligible. 

AWARD PROVISIONS

  • Round-trip economy international travel for participant.
  • Room, Board, and all other program expenses will be covered.
  • Sickness/accident insurance.

APPLICATION

Application forms are available from the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section. Five copies of the completed applications should be submitted to the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section November 17, 2008.  Applicants will be notified of selection or non-selection by mid-January, 2009. The Enhancement Seminar will commence in June, 2009.
