SGU Alumni Make Their Mark at SUNY Downstate

Posted On 2007-01-12 , 10:24 AM

The following letter is one example of the many accomplishments of SGU graduates:

Hello,

Happy New Year! I just wanted to share some fun facts/statistics with you all. Eight of us from the class of 2005 joined the Internal Medicine residency program at SUNY Downstate. From among that group, since entering the program, we are: 3/3 class reps, 2/5 Interns of the Year, and as of this past week, 3/5 Chief Residents for the Dept. of Medicine for 2008-2009! All positions are elected by peers, faculty/administration, or both. While we didn't all know one another while in the Caribbean (2 of us were in the August class and the rest were in the January class), there was an instantaneous bond formed when we met our first day of orientation. We frequently work with one another, socialize, and talk about our SGU experience with a great deal of fondness. Just wanted to keep you posted on the accomplishments of SGU alumni!

Sincerely,

Arvind Ponnambalam '05

"Welcome to Grenada" is a recently developed resource guide designed to help incoming students familiarize themselves with not just the University but the Island as a whole.  Written by SGU students themselves, this compilation of helpful campus facts, Island attractions and personal stories, will remove some of the unexpected for future students.

SGU and UNN Partner for New Global Scholars Program

Posted On 2006-12-13 , 10:45 AM

SGU and the University of Northumbria (UNN) unite as partners in an exciting program which will allow SGU's School of Medicine to offer the first year of basic sciences on the UNN campus in Newcastle, United Kingdom.  Students accepted in this new Global Scholars Program will be matriculated at both SGU and UNN.

The Global Scholars Program will follow the same successful curriculum as we have offered for 30 years in Grenada.  In order to maintain our status with licensing boards around the world, the chairs of each department and the course directors will oversee both the Grenada and UK programs.  This will assure that we offer the same excellent program in both locations.  We will use a combination of current SGU faculty, visiting professors and new hire professors to deliver the program.  The textbooks, exams and academic schedule will all be the same as the Grenada program.

The initial pilot program will begin with a class of 50-60 students this January. SGU is seeking students from developing countries who are either committed to returning home to practice medicine or plan to dedicate a part of their professional careers to practice medicine in struggling parts of the world.
