Student Organizations

There are over 25 SGU-sponsored student organizations. The Student Government Association has representation on the Faculty Senate and is involved in the governance of the University. The other organizations are centered around vocational, religious, social, cultural, athletic, professional or avocational interests.

Student Government Association (SGA)
The SGA was organized to provide students at St. George's University with a structured, democratic body that represents them in administrative matters, especially as they relate to student affairs, and provides representation with the Alumni Association. The Student Government Association has representatives from each class who sit on various committees within the academic Senates of the University.

Student Government Association - Clinical (SGA -C)
Students elect SGA-Clinical representatives before leaving for their clinical years. These representatives interact with the SGA representatives in providing feedback on clinical experiences, concerns or other problems. A publication entitled Clinical Rounds contains relevant articles pertaining to the concerns of clinical students.

AMSA (American Medical Students Association)
As an overseas chapter of the American Medical Students Association, this group promotes active improvement in medical education, world health care and the enhancement of all obligations in the medical profession. The approximately 400 members participate in Grenada during the clinical years. This is one of the largest chapters of the AMA's AMSA group. The benefits of being a student member of The American Medical Students Association include health and auto insurance at a reduced rate, a forum through the AMSA Review, and involvement in the AMSA health fair and other social projects for the Grenada community.

SAVMA
St. George's has an affiliate of the SAVMA and coordinates chapter functions, promotes the exchange of ideas and information, and represents its members in personal matters, both as students and future veterinarians.

Significant Others Organization (SOs)
The school-run SO Organization offers support and activities for spouses, family and friends of St. George's University. Our goal is to help each other adjust to our new roles as islanders. Our group is made up of people with varied backgrounds, and all of our life experiences will contribute to make everyone's stay in Grenada an exciting one.

Armenian Medical Organization
The AMO represents SGU's Armenian students. It promotes Armenian culture and history to develop cross-cultural awareness in the SGU community. AMO's goal is to promote the opportunities offered by St. George's University in Armenian communities, to facilitate the transition period of incoming students and to help these students become accustomed to the rigorous University schedule, as well as to life in Grenada.

Emergency Medical Club
Students who have prior clinical experience in the allied health sciences join the EMC. This enables them to contribute to the improvement of health care in Grenada. It affords them the opportunity to share experience and knowledge with others.

The Holistic Medicine Club
The Holistic Medicine Club provides a forum for students, staff and members of the St. George's University community who are interested in exploring holistic and alternative medicine.

International Student Organizations
This organization is involved in orienting students at the beginning of their studies at St. George's University, and helps them become acclimated to life in Grenada.

Iota Epsilon Alpha Honor Medical Society
IEA is a student organization comprised of students who have excelled academically and are willing to participate in various extracurricular activities and international health projects that promote scholarship, research and public health and welfare for the underprivileged.

The  Preveterinary Medical Club
The Preveterinary Medical Club aspires to gain basic knowledge and practical experience of veterinary medicine through the experiences of established veterinarians. The club strives to lend a helping hand to the animal kingdom of Grenada, as well as be a support group to preveterinary medical students.

Religious/Cultural Organizations
The goal of these organizations is to support spiritual and cultural growth within the SGU community. Many cultural and religious groups are represented. There are many places of religious worship throughout St. George’s and the surrounding area.

Surgery Club
The Surgery Club provides a forum in which all St. George's University students, regardless of future professional interests, can relay an enhanced understanding of surgery.

Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA)
The undergraduate Student Government Association of St. George's University is a representative of all Undergraduate students in the School of Arts and Sciences. The USGA acts on behalf of the undergraduate students to address concerns and assist in their development in academic and nonacademic matters in an effort to ensure that they are awarded the best possible experience at the University.

The Premedical Club
The Premedical Club is an organization developed with the aim of exposing premedical students to the various medical specialties, as well as to St. George's University School of Medicine and the Grenadian community. The club hosts a number of activities such as guest lectures, social activities and visits to local healthcare facilities. This organization provides a sound preprofessional foundation upon which students can make informed decisions about their career choice.

Student Affiliate of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SAAVMA)
The Student Affiliate of the American Veterinary Medical Association coordinates chapter functions; organizes special lectures and seminars; promotes the exchange of ideas and information among students in all terms within and outside of St. George's University; promotes the development of professional knowledge, ethics and conduct; and represents its members in matters that concern them, both as students and future veterinarians.

Physicians for Human Rights (PHR)
Physicians for Human Rights is a student organization dedicated to educating its members, future physicians and members of the community about human rights issues. Members strive to become aware and involved in issues both at a local and global level.

Women in Medicine (WIM)
WIM is a committee that advocates for the interests of women in medicine, particularly physicians-in-training. We promote women's health, emphasizing well-being and autonomy, and we work for the inclusion of women's health issues in medical school curricula and continuing medical education. We also work to affirm the basic right of reproductive freedom and to educate women to become full participants in their own health care.
