SGU Beyond 30 FAQ's
Who are the key members?
What is Work Flow?
Work Flow is an open, flexible tool that unites processes, information, and people. It automates, simplifies, and directs the flow of information through your entire enterprise. The results are efficient operations, increased automation and visibility, institution-wide consistency, and easy exception handling.

With Work Flow, administrators, staff, and faculty can access workflows and complete assignments through a standard web browser. Workflow's web interface provides anywhere/anytime access to tasks and lets you customize the presentation template to incorporate your institution's design.

Work Flow's automated processes allow business events to trigger user notifications, business process logic, external or internal emails, and automated activities. Mundane, low-value tasks can be streamlined and redundancy eliminated. Morale and productivity improve measurably because staff gain time to focus on more strategic activities.

  • Benefits of Work Flow include:
  • Improved customer service and productivity
  • Integration of Banner forms and data into business processes
  • Consistent organizational procedures
  • Flexible exception handling
  • Instant communication
  • Enhanced responsiveness to actions
  • Business process metrics tracking workflow effectiveness
  • Automatic events based on business processes or data conditions
  • Graphical workflow design and administration
  • Testing and evolution of business processes without affecting workflows in progress
  • Accelerated completion of cross-departmental tasks
  • Dramatic savings in staff time
  • Improved morale

Work Flow allows you to run your processes the way that you see fit, with the flexibility to streamline operations and adapt to changing business needs while measurably improving productivity, morale, and customer service.

What is BPA?
BPA stands for Business Process Analysis. Simply stated, it means an analysis of all aspects of how a job is done and how that job translates into serving students.
What is a Team?
A Team is the group responsible for managing a feature of the design or implementation of the SGU Beyond 30 project.
What is Luminis?
Luminis is the product that serves as the face of Banner; it is the portal to all the data and communications of the University. It is how SGU will organize and communicate relevant information to students, faculty, administration, alumni and other defined groups; it will be what each person will see on his/her computer screen when logged into the University system.
What do Luminis Focus Groups do?
The Team Leaders for Luminis have already begun to hold a series of focus groups with students, faculty, staff and administration, for feedback on needs, wishes and desires on how each group wants from a University data and communication system.
What are Data Standards?
Data Standards are an agreed set of standards for SGU and USS about how data are named and stored in the database.
What are Data Definitions?
In order to have accessible integrated information readily available, all in the University community must accept one standard definition for all terms used in reporting queries.
What is Data Conversion/Migration?
Data Conversion/Migration is the process happening after all the decisions about data standards and work flow have been discussed and agreed. The data must be converted from our old system into our new system. After this it must be tested (beta-testing) to ensure that it has been converted intact. We strongly urge all those who “own” data to begin conforming this data and cleaning up inconsistencies; we cannot migrate disorganized and mismatching data.
What is Development Environment?
While all decisions are being made, we are in the “development environment,” i.e., nothing is live and we will be working in our old system as things are developing.
What is Production Environment?
After the decisions are made and the development is complete, we will “Go Live.” During that time, both systems will be up and running as the new system is being tested.
