RESEARCH PROJECTS
Since its inception, the Windward Islands Research and Education Foundation has forged partnerships with a myriad of regional and international institutions in a continued effort to advance health and environmental development through multidisciplinary research and education programs. Collaborators include Ministries of Health, Education, Agriculture and Tourism, Universities and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) throughout the globe.


The Windward Research Institute carries out short-and long-term studies in epidemiology, anthropology, virology, conservation ecology, marine biology and other topics relevant to tropical climates and developing nations.
Current Research Projects on Infectious Diseases include:
- Dengue/Avian pox virus
- Zoonoses in dogs (Demodex, Erhlichiosis, Intestinal parasites, Emerging Zoonoses in rodents/birds Campylobacter, Leptospirosis, Hanta virus, Angostrongylus spp)
- FIV and bacterial infections in cats
- Lymphatic filariasis in Guyana
- Cystic Echinococcosis in Turkey, Romania and Peru
Current Research Projects on Non-Infectious Diseases include:
- Anatomical sciences
- Medicinal plants, Cancer
- Biofilms, Water quality, Coral reefs
- Noise and hearing loss and hearing health care, CERI Program, PHPR Program, Renewable Energy Program
- English language and communication
- Public Health effects of natural disasters
- Genetic Correlates of Addictive Diseases: cocaine, alcohol and marijuana
Past Research Projects on Infectious Diseases include:
- Cystic hydatid disease (Echinococcus Granulosus) in the mid-Atlas mountains of Morocco, North West Africa.
- HIV in pregnant women in Grenada
- Mosquitoes and tourism: Dengue
- Malaria vector distribution and the threat of reintroduction
- Taxoplasma gondii in Grenada
- The Grenada Dove project
- Prevalence of heartworm in dogs in Grenada
